I Hate Queer Eye (and you should too)

The other day at work I was having a random conversation with a co-worker. The conversaton came round to the channel Bravo. As we discussed the channel and its programming the co-worker commented that Bravo was certainly "the most gay-friendly channel on cable." He felt that because they aired "Queer Eye For The Straight Guy" it made them gay-friendly. He went on to say that Bravo certainly had a lot of gay viewers because of that show. I had to explain the truth to him and since I am afraid others share his view I am going to explain it to you. Here goes: Gay men don't watch Queer Eye. In just the same way that black people didn't watch minstrel shows. Queer Eye is the equivilent of black face for my people. The show should be called "Fags Behaving Badly." This isn't some socio-political rant. I am not starting a petition or any of that crap. But think about it. There will always be gays on television. As long as Anderson Cooper is on CNN and LPGA is on ESPN gays and lesbians will be seen. I know television plays to the lowest common denominator but still I wish that there were more "normal" gays on televison and perhaps even . . . dare I say it gay men that don't dress well or gay women that don't play golf. Remember the next time you turn on Bravo and see an ad for Queer Eye. It is black face for my people.

When my parents visited last week they brought the family photo albums. I aim to scan all the photos so we have a digital photo archive of our family. This photo of my brother and I is one of my favorites. If we were anymore adorable I would vomit. Look at how I am holding the tackle box . . . does that scream future fag or what? I am also giving serious consideration to filing charges against my mother for allowing me to be photographed in those shorts. If that isn't child abuse I don't know what is.
